Batya MacAdam-Somer, Meghann Welsh, and Bonnie Lander - each accomplished musicians in the classical and folk scenes - have come together under the name The Bechdels to form a band that highlights their wide ranging interests and talents. The trio takes their name from the famed Bechdel Test, a simple feminist litmus test for literature and cinema which asks if at least two female characters ever hold their own conversation about something other than a man. The trio performs an eclectic mix of a cappella and self-accompanied harmony arrangements ranging from old time gospel and renaissance counterpoint to Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, and The Beach Boys (among others).
